Around a third of people in the UK are myopic. The condition usually starts in childhood between 6-13 years of age and tends to get worse until the eye has stopped growing. Myopia can also develop in younger children and adults. People are more likely to become myopic if their parents are myopic. Myopia or short-sight means distance vision appears out of focus whilst near vision is clear. Myopia is usually easy to correct with glasses or contact lenses (or both). Myopia management is trying to slow down how quickly myopia gets worse. It is especially important to recognise this in children and consider treatment options early to reduce the associated long term ocular health risks that myopia brings.
