The key to early detection

Early detection of vision issues in children is essential for their development and academic success. Regular eye tests can identify and address vision problems that may affect learning, coordination, and overall visual comfort. We recommend scheduling children’s eye tests at regular intervals as advised by your optometrist or based on your child’s specific needs.

It’s worth noting that children under the age of 16 and those in full-time education under the age of 19, are entitled to an NHS-funded eye test. If glasses are required, your child will also receive an NHS voucher, which provides a discount on the cost of their spectacles

understanding our process

How a child eye exam works

We specialise in offering thorough eye examinations designed specifically for children. This will involve taking a retinal photograph or retinal scan of the back of the eye.

We take the time to explain every stage of the process and address any questions or concerns you or your child may have. Our focus is on creating a calm and friendly atmosphere, ensuring children feel comfortable and at ease during their eye examination.

Myopia Management

Around a third of people in the UK are myopic. The condition usually starts in childhood between 6-13 years of age and tends to get worse until the eye has stopped growing. Myopia can also develop in younger children and adults. People are more likely to become myopic if their parents are myopic. Myopia or short-sight means distance vision appears out of focus whilst near vision is clear. Myopia is usually easy to correct with glasses or contact lenses (or both). Myopia management is trying to slow down how quickly myopia gets worse. It is especially important to recognise this in children and consider treatment options early to reduce the associated long term ocular health risks that myopia brings. At Scotts Opticians we offer a bespoke myopia management treatment plan for your child based on their eye examination, short-sighted prescription and needs at the time of assessment.
