Understanding Myopia
Myopia Management
Myopia is more commonly known as short-sightedness. Near objects are clear but distant objects appear blurred. Myopia is reaching epidemic levels globally and it is predicted that by 2050 more than 50% of the population will be myopic.
For years we have only been able to correct a person’s myopia with glasses or contact lenses that had no influence on the progression of their short sight.
As a profession we are now able to offer our patients specialist myopia management products that have been shown to reduce the progression of short sight by up to 60%.
This comes in the form of contact lenses such as MiSight daily disposable and Night lenses (Ortho-K) or spectacle lenses.

Identifying Myopia Early
Child Myopia
Myopia in children is increasing and occurring at a much younger age. If both parents are myopic then there is a 50% chance the child will be myopic but there is still a 25% chance of becoming myopic if neither parent is myopic.
With every myopic eye comes an increased risk of serious eye conditions such as retinal detachments and myopic macular degeneration. The risk increases as the level of myopia increases. There is currently no cure for myopia but we can try to mangae the progression.
The products we use to manage myopia
Night Lenses (Ortho K)
The lenses is worn at night while you sleep. They correct your vision by gently reshaping the outer layer of cells on the cornea to create a perfectly shaped lens. On waking the lenses are removed and you have perfect vision for the rest of the day without the need for spectacles or day contact lenses.
When used as lenses for myopia management they reduce the progression of short sight by up to 50%
MiSight
Soft daily disposable lenses worn every day for at least 10hrs. The lenses have a dual zone technology one zone corrects the vision and the other is a treatment zone that focuses the peripheral image in front of the retina. Misight lenses have shown to reduce the worsening of myopia by up to 50%.
Specialist Spectacle lenses
Several spectacle lens manufactures have now produced myopia management lenses for glasses. The glasses need to be worn daily for 10-12 hrs everyday to be effective. The lenses work by correcting short sight so the person can see clearly but also focus the peripheral image inside the retina.
Myopia management spectacle lenses have shown to reduce short sight progression by up to 50%
